2025 Paul-André Linteau Prize: The Winners

2025 Paul-André Linteau Prize: The Winners

For the very first time, the Pointe-à-Callière Foundation and the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française have awarded the Paul-André Linteau Prize, a distinction created to celebrate excellence in works devoted to the history of Montréal.

This new prize, made possible thanks to a dedicated fund established by Mr. Paul-André Linteau, professor emeritus at UQAM, aims to recognize the diligence, originality, and quality of historical research on the city.

The prize, which has two components, carries a $3,000 cash award for the best book and a $1,000 cash award for the best article.

The 2025 Paul-André Linteau Prize (book category) was awarded to Janice Harvey for Their Benevolent Design. Conservative Women and Protestant Child Charities in Montreal (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2024). The book offers a subtle and insightful analysis of Protestant charities founded in Montréal during the 19th century, highlighting the often-overlooked commitment of elite women in child welfare and the fight against poverty.

The 2025 Paul-André Linteau Prize (article category) was awarded to Anaël Marrec for “Du biogaz en héritage. Mobilisations autour d’un “gisement” d’énergie dans une décharge urbaine (Montréal, 1986-2009)” published in Revue d’histoire urbaine (Vol. 52, No. 2, September 2024). This study sheds light on a significant episode in Montréal’s environmental history through the controversial transformation of the Miron landfill, revealing the tensions between technological development, the environment, and social justice.

With this first edition of the prize, the Pointe-à-Callière Foundation and the IHAF have highlighted the vitality and diversity of historical research on Montréal, while paying tribute to the exceptional contribution of Paul-André Linteau, whose work has profoundly shaped the understanding of Québec’s urban history.
