Join the Museum’s guides and discover the remarkable history of the archaeological site of St. Anne’s Market and the Parliament of the Province of Canada as you explore these two exhibitions.
From 2010 to 2017, between McGill and Saint-Pierre streets, on a portion of present-day Place D’Youville West, Pointe-à-Callière carried out one of its largest archaeological digs, uncovering the remains of a 19th century building that successively housed Montréal’s very first covered market (1832 - 1844) and the Parliament of the Province of Canada (1844 - 1849). Some 350,000 artifacts were unearthed, restored, and interpreted.
In Old Fire Station No. 1, Montréal Capital City, an all-new exhibition, reveals a selection of these invaluable objects, authentic witnesses to a fascinating era during which Montréal was the capital of Canada.
Delve even deeper into the subject matter, on Place D’Youville, with the outdoor exhibition A Parliament Under Your Feet, where you can stroll over key areas of the building’s remains—right under the soles of your shoes!
This activity is taking place as part of Archaeology Month.
