Who Is the Real Santa Claus?

Christmas with the family, at Pointe-à-Callière

Montréal, November 10, 2018 – Experience the magic of Christmas at Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Archaeology and History Complex. Young and old alike, together with family or friends, are invited to come meet Melchior, Babushka, Black Peter, and our own wonderful Santa Claus. While visiting the Museum’s archaeological remains, you will get to know these four fabulous characters, who each have their own story of Christmas to tell.

A fantastical, theatrical tour
Melchior, the old king of Arabia and Nubia, left Persia along with two other Magi kings—Balthazar and Caspar—following a star pointing the way to the Christ Child.

From Russia, Babushka is a grandmother with a heart of gold. She roams her country, leaving presents for all new-borns in the hope that one of them may be the baby Jesus. Waiting by her fireplace, Babushka welcomes you and teaches you how to say, “Merry Christmas!” in Russian.

While Melchior rewards good children with presents, Black Peter instead punishes those who’ve been bad by filling their shoes with turnips, stones, and coal! Ow!

The final stop on the tour takes us to our good old Santa Claus, an iconic character without whom this holiday would not be all that it is. With his friendly demeanour and debonair appearance, our good man embodies the magic of our own homegrown traditions. He explains how he manages to deliver so many presents all around the world in a single night. Our brief world tour of holiday traditions comes to an end with wishes of peace and joy… and a few treats, of course!

This is an activity for the whole family and is included in the price of admission to the Museum.
