20 Events to Celebrate Pointe-à-Callière’s 20th Anniversary in 2012

Montréal, April 25, 2012 – On May 17, Pointe-à-Callière, located at the birthplace of Montréal, celebrates its 20th anniversary on the same day that Montréal marks its 370th. The month of May will be overflowing with inspiring events surrounding both the Museum’s anniversary and that of the city!
May 1st – Montréal, City of History
Starting on May 1st, 35 museums and organizations, including Pointe-à-Callière, are taking part in Montréal, City of History, an event that brings together under one banner a special program of activities highlighting Montréal history throughout 2012. Over 60 activities for all audiences will be held until December 31 to mark the 370th anniversary of Montréal and the 400th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Paul Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve. The program will be available at www.musees-histoire-montreal.ca starting May 1st.
May 10 – Now for a Dow! History of a local brewery
Through a partnership with the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Pointe-à-Callière is inviting the public to explore an exhibition on the history of this brewery that was at the heart of economic life in southwest Montréal and all of Québec for over 150 years. The exhibition is being presented at the École de technologie supérieure’s INGO Innovation Center, the Dow complex’s former brewing tower on Peel Street.
May 17 – A gift to Montrealers to mark the founding of Montréal
To mark the 370th anniversary of Montréal and the Museum’s 20th year of existence, from May 17 until the end of the year, Pointe-à-Callière will be offering Montrealers an exceptional gift: free admission to its permanent exhibitions Where Montréal Was Born and Montréal Love Stories. Those born in 1992 will also enjoy free admission to the Museum as a whole on May 18, 19, and 20. As the birthplace of Montréal, Pointe-à-Callière is the prime location at which to celebrate these important anniversaries.
May 17 – Samurai – The Prestigious Collection of Richard Béliveau
A premiere and an exclusive presentation! Pointe-à-Callière presents a spectacular exhibition showcasing over 275 objects, all of which are true masterpieces, including full armours with helmets and masks, as well as spears, swords, and artistic objects relating to the life and culture of these mythical warriors who ruled Japan for 700 years. These items are from the private collection of Richard Béliveau, university professor, researcher, author, lecturer, and well-known broadcaster.
May 26 and 27 – Pointe-à-Callière's Cultural Feast is back
All weekend long, all around the Museum, Pointe-à-Callière's Cultural Feast is not to be missed! On the program: shows, presentations, activities for children, and a variety of demonstrations. The festivities also shine a spotlight on Japan this year, and on Montréal’s cultural diversity.
May 27 – Open House for the 10th anniversary of Pointe-à-Callière’s Archaeological Field School
In May, explore Pointe-à-Callière’s Archaeological Field School, created through a partnership with the Université de Montréal. Come meet the students who have been digging at the birthplace of Montréal, where teams of archaeologists and interns have unearthed remains of Fort Ville-Marie and Callière’s residence.
May 27 – Montréal Museums Day: Open House at Pointe-à-Callière
On Montréal Museums Day, enjoy free admission to the permanent exhibitions and the Yours Truly, Montréal multimedia show. There will also be a 50% discount on admission to the temporary exhibition Samurai – The Prestigious Collection of Richard Béliveau.
