The Ravages of Time: Restoring Heritage Objects from France
Produced and mounted by the Saint-Romain-en-Gal archaeology museum in France, which has been twinned with Pointe-à-Callière since the fall of 1996, the exhibition brings together some one hundred extraordinary objects that have been conserved through skilled restoration techniques.
From the wood in tools and leather in sandals to fabrics in clothing, bronze and other metals from homes in far-off times, ceramics from the late Middle Ages, stone from mosaics and paint from Roman wall coverings, this exhibition is a trip back through time guided by the material traces left of people's lives over the centuries.
Pointe-à-Callière is delighted to give Montrealers the opportunity to discover these archaeological objects from a number of French museums, restored in four workshops in the Rhône-Alps region. They are a tribute to the skills of the craftspeople who worked to restore and conserve them.
Note that since the two museums have been twinned, this is the first exhibition from the French museum to be shown here. Pointe-à-Callière has already presented its exhibition on The Surprising History of Aqueducts, Water Mains and Sewers at Saint-Romain-en-Gal.
