Exploring the majestic St. Lawrence

Set sail on an unforgettable journey along the banks of the St. Lawrence River! Opening on November 30, 2023, the exhibition The St. Lawrence River, Echoes from the Shores invites you to explore the third largest waterway in North America from a new and captivating perspective.

Ten stops along the St. Lawrence

Transportation, naval construction, shipwrecks, navigation, environmental issues, wars, fishing, leisure activities, and holidays... the river reveals its multiple facets at ten fascinating stops throughout the exhibition.

A true axis of communication between diverse riverside communities, the St. Lawrence is a natural treasure that welcomes millions of people along its watershed. Staggeringly large and perpetually changing, it is one of the most difficult rivers to navigate, due to its currents, rapids, and shoals. Consisting of both saltwater and freshwater habitats, the river also has a multitude of complex and fragile ecosystems that must be protected. A source of inspiration for many artists, it holds an important place in Québec’s collective imagination.

The exhibition will show how—from past to present—the river has been explored, navigated, tamed, and celebrated!

A sensory experience

Look back on the river’s history as you feast your eyes on over 300 objects from various collections, some of which are part of an exceptional loan from the Musée maritime du Québec in L’Islet. A majestic figurehead, model ships, a diving suit, naval construction tools, objects from shipwrecks and battles fought on the St. Lawrence, clothing, accessories, and commemorative objects—along with various tools used for navigation, fishing, and marine exploration—will be on display, immersing you in the fascinating world of the St. Lawrence. Artwork, archival images, first-hand accounts, interviews, excerpts from poignant documentaries, and large-scale projections complete the exhibition experience, bringing to life the river’s incomparable beauty.

Delve into the sensory world of the St. Lawrence. Keep your eyes, your ears, and—especially—your heart wide open to fully experience the river’s majesty!
