Africa Musica!

In the latter half of the 19th century, Europe dominated the world. The "dark continent" of Africa remained a largely unconquered, unknown land, however, luring adventurers from England, France, Italy and other countries. After years of exploration, they located the sources of the Nile and travelled the length of the mighty Congo River.

Souvenirs from another age

These early explorers, missionaries and administrators from another time brought back exotic and unusual musical instruments as mementoes of their voyages. Now Pointe-à-Callière is displaying nearly 160 of the instruments collected by Italian explorers during their fabulous expeditions. Africa Musica! is the result of unique co-operation between Pointe-à-Callière and History and the Luigi Pigorini National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography, in Rome. The Pigorini Museum houses one of the world's finest collections of African musical instruments, which have never before left the museum.

A fascinating musical exploration

Pointe-à-Callière is proud to present a large portion of the Pigorini collection, in an original and exclusive exhibition designed by our own team. Come explore the musical universe of Africa, through an original soundtrack and visitor activities allowing you to try your hand at playing some of these delightful instruments.
