Outdoors, around the Museum and at Place Royale
350 Place Royale, in Old Montréal

After a fully virtual edition in 2020, the in-person Public Market is back! Since we care about your health, the Museum has thought of everything to make sure your visit is both enjoyable and safe.

With its booths and festive activities, Pointe-à-Callière’s Public Market will plunge you into the atmosphere of Montréal’s first marketplace, where Indigenous and French people came together and traded. A formidable historical re-enactment will instantly transport you to the 18th century!

Stroll through the merchant stalls to the sound of street musicians and enjoy local artisanal products. Discover the skills of the olden days by taking part in activities in the Public Market’s three areas:

Garden Area
Learn more about ancestral plants! Which plants grew in the territory at the time of New France? How were they used, especially by different Indigenous communities? Watch a demonstration of how to make fishing tools from organic materials, just like they did in the 18th century!

Place Royale Area
How were clothes made in New France? As you take in traditional Indigenous men’s and women’s clothing, watch demonstrations of quillwork embroidery, tanning, traditional leatherwork, and featherwork. Discover the clothes worn by colonists and Montréal's bourgeoisie in the 18th century. See how people back then would spin the wool to make these garments.

Pointe Area
Attend a workshop on the Indigenous medicine wheel and learn all about its philosophy and traditional cultural connections before making a wheel of your own! Immortalize your trip back in time to New France with a photo amidst a decor of flowers and greenery inspired by the harvest season.

Continue your immersion in New France by taking part in our virtual activities!
