December 2020
Pointe-à-Callière’s new exhibition A Railroad to Dreams will soon be available virtually
Montréal, December 1st, 2020 – From means of transportation, to toy, to collector’s item—the train is pulling in to Pointe-à-Callière this winter! The Museum is unveiling its new exhibition, A Railroad to Dreams, with two virtual events in December. The public will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of model trains in this exhibition, which takes a playful, technological, and historical look at the railway in all its forms, and at different scales!
Free virtual inauguration – December 4
On December 4, the Museum is inviting the public to a virtual inauguration of the exhibition, live on Facebook, starting at noon. Get an advance look at the exhibition and take part in a discussion moderated by train enthusiast Matthieu Dugal, who will be joined by specialists from Pointe-à-Callière and Exporail, as well as a historian. The event will give you a behind-the-scenes look at how the exhibition was set-up, showcasing favourite not-to-be-missed objects on display, and highlighting the history of model railroading and toy trains, as well as railway development in Canada and in Montréal. This is a free event, open to one and all, from railway fans to those new to the world of trains!

Virtual guided tour – December 13 at 1:30 pm and 3 pm
Providing an exclusive way to explore this new exhibition during the Museum’s temporary closure, Pointe-à-Callière is offering a virtual tour led by an interpreter-guide. From the comfort of home, participants will follow the guide through the various exhibition rooms over the course of an hour and will get more details by asking questions via the discussion platform, as they would during an in-person tour at the Museum.
A Railroad to Dreams lets you admire hundreds of model trains and railway objects, such as models of special trains as well as tools, costumes and many unusual items, while taking you on an extraordinary excursion into the world of train aficionados and passionate collectors. Thanks to touching archive photos and videos, sound settings that plunge you into the hustle and bustle of a grand station, and wonderful little trains that come alive before your very eyes, this exhibition let’s you reconnect with your inner child!
You’ll also discover mythical trains that offer unforgettable journeys, their spot under the Christmas tree, some little-known rail trades, not to mention the major rail companies that have let us explore Canada from coast to coast to coast and trains’ iconic roles in the movies. Cinema-lovers will be thrilled to see a real DeLorean, just like the one in “Back to the Future” and to get their photo taken on the famous Platform 9¾, as seen in the series of Harry Potter films.
This exhibition also opens a window onto our collective history, first of the Canadian railway, which is inextricably tied to the country’s development, and second of Montreal, which played a major role in the development of this industry.
The virtual guided tour is available for $10 (including taxes and fees) and will take place on December 13 at 1:30 pm (in French) and at 3 pm (in English). Members of the Museum will be able to take a free guided tour on December 12 at 1:30 pm.
