FAVOURITES! OUR COLLECTIONS ON DISPLAY (February 24, 2022 – January 8, 2023)
Exploring the treasures in Pointe-à-Callière’s ethnographic collection
Opening on February 24, 2022, and continuing until January 8, 2023, the Museum will present the exhibition Favourites! Our collections on display to mark its 30th anniversary. Taking an appealingly original approach, the exhibition highlights some 400 objects from the Museum’s young collection—a collection whose documentary scope and significance bear witness to various chapters of Montréal history, from the past to the present day. Visitors are invited to come take a true journey through time that is sure to stir up a few memories… and a magnificent sense of wonder.
Acquired over the past thirty years, the selection of objects, chosen from among the thousands housed in the collection, reveals the distinct cultural characteristics that make Montréal such a unique city! Bearing witness to daily life in Montréal, the objects and artefacts will be grouped into 20 thematic “boxes” that bring to life various facets of the city’s history: significant events, diverse means of transportation, booming telecommunications, the economy and finance, big stores, navigation on the St. Lawrence, sports and leisure… and, of course, cultural and festive Montréal.
People are encouraged to come dig up their own favourites from among the objects, furniture, books, maps, posters, and iconography chosen from over 40,000 pieces in Pointe-à-Callière’s collection. A highly entertaining and moving exhibition that will make you fall in love with Montréal… all over again!
Pointe-à-Callière, 30 years of history
There will be 30 events held across 2022, and the public is invited to come take part. May 17 will be a highlight: a date marking the anniversary of Pointe-à-Callière’s inauguration in 1992, as well as the 380th anniversary of Montréal. Perfect occasions to come explore or rediscover the city’s birthplace, and to enjoy Pointe-à-Callière’s various offerings! Complete programming will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on February 23, 2022.
VIKINGS – DRAGONS OF THE NORTHERN SEAS (April 14 – October 10, 2022)
A captivating and immersive exhibition for all ages!
Opening in the spring of 2022, the exhibition VIKINGS – Dragons of the Northern Seas will take a unique and innovative look at the fascinating and legendary culture of those we call the “Vikings.”
Peasants, traders, navigators, and warriors—the Vikings left their mark on the world between 793 and 1066 CE. These skilled navigators sailed the seas and earned a reputation as fearsome warriors. But beyond the legends, what do we really know about this ancient people of the North?
Featuring over 650 objects from the collections of the National Museum of Denmark, the exhibition is a captivating immersion into the real and imaginary world of the Vikings. It traces the history of this legendary people through four major narratives: the tale of origins, the tale of life, the tale of travel, and the tale of the end of days—themes through which the exhibition examines the Viking way of life, the values and practices of Scandinavian society, navigation, and war, as well as traditions and beliefs. The exhibition also addresses Nordic heritage in today’s popular culture.
In following the riveting path through the exhibition, visitors will get to explore the objects and artefacts on display, authentic evidence from the age of the Vikings—all of it unfolding against a breathtaking exhibition design, punctuated with images from Ubisoft’s @Assassin’s Creed Valhalla game.
This exhibition is produced by Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Archaeology and History Complex, through a partnership with the National Museum of Denmark and MuseumsPartner in Austria.
