With your students, explore the captivating world of witches in the exhibition Witches: Out of the Shadows, revealing their fascinating and little-known history!
See over 400 authentic objects and delve into witches’ beliefs, rituals, and mystical practices. From the old hag in fairytales to modern icons of feminism, learn how this symbol has evolved and continues to inspire us today. A bewitching immersion in which myth and reality intersect and intertwine!
A two-part museum experience!
On the ground floor:
Follow a path through history, examining witch hunts in Europe, New England, and New France. Learn how it all happened and how these women were persecuted.
Upstairs:
Students explore this section of the exhibition independently to answer various questions as part of a quiz-game. They’ll explore objects relating to sorcery, learn how the figure of the witch has evolved in pop culture, and see how the image of the witch has been transformed into a feminist symbol.

Competencies to develop
The activities on this tour are in keeping with the aims of government education programs and help develop the following competencies.

Tolerance – Draw upon specific cases to help students reflect on indifference, tolerance, and intolerance. Help them consider various responses that individuals and societies have had regarding such situations.

Religious references in art and culture – Become aware that the religious character of certain works of art refers to writings, key figures, and religious objects, and that these aspects can sometimes be found in secular works of art.
