Lecture – The Montréal Olympic Games

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Montréal Olympic Games, the time has come to rediscover some lesser-known aspects of this event, which is often disparaged due to its organizational challenges (debt, strikes, construction delays). However, a look at the archives reveals a much broader ambition: to put education, youth, culture, sports, and Olympism at the service of Québec society.

This lecture aims to restore the memory of the Montréal Games by highlighting several of the event’s key aspects: a major educational innovation with the first-ever comprehensive Olympic education program; a concrete commitment to youth, notably through the International Youth Camp; a strong showing of cultural boldness through the Arts and Culture program; and a lasting intangible legacy that continues to shape Québec society.

Florent Lefevre

Florent Lefevre is a postdoctoral fellow at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). His research is focused on the history of the Olympic Movement at the turn of the 1950s and 1990s. As part of his postdoctoral studies, he is working on the history and heritage of the 1976 Montréal Olympic Games and, more generally, on the history of the sports movement and physical education in Québec.
