In Chinese tradition, mothers and grandmothers make clothing adorned with symbols to protect their children from hostile spirit. These unique items often include hats shaped like tigers, dogs, fishes or rabbits, each animal protecting the child with a special gift: health, abundance, longevity and happiness.

During this interactive, family-friendly lecture—held to coincide with the Headdresses from Around the World, The Antoine de Galbert Collection exhibition—you will learn how to read hidden Chinese protecting symbols and you will explore the history and legends behind it.

Lecturer: Violaine Debailleul
In charge of the Ethnographic Collection in the Anthropology Department at the Université de Montréal, Violaine is a member of the advisory committee for the Headdresses from Around the World exhibition.
