The Société historique de Montréal presents the lecture:

Anti-Colonial Opposition in Upper and Lower Canada
Before and in 1837 and 1838

It has been rightly noted that Mackenzie and Upper Canada, on the one hand, and Papineau and Lower Canada, on the other, had similar grounds for opposing the British colonial system. Language, culture, and religion may have differed, but republican criticism of the Family Compact was similar on both sides. And yet…

In both colonies, the Patriot and Reformist oppositions spoke to each other, inspired one another, and worked together. But to what extent did they present a common front? What individual and shared means did they bring to the resistance and the insurrection? Where did they meet in 1837, and in 1838?

Answers to these questions will be put forward.
