In 2025, the project to renovate Saint-Paul Street in Old Montréal entered its eleventh year.

What if archaeological excavations in Old Montréal could shed light on the great 17th-century fur fairs? Recent discoveries around Place Royale and Ruelle Chagouamigon have unearthed remarkably well-preserved artifacts that bear witness to trade between Indigenous peoples and Europeans. From crafts to merchandise, and including spiritual practices, these previously unseen artifacts invite us to trace the origins of a trade that shaped Montréal’s history.
