Pointe-à-Callière,
A Great Human Adventure

Length: 14:15 min
The Pointe-à-Callière Museum was created as part of efforts to revitalize Old Montréal, a movement that started in the early 1980s. In 1989, the City gave the Société immobilière du patrimoine architectural de Montréal the mandate of creating a major institution that would help to breathe new life into the historic Old Montréal district. It was an extraordinary opportunity: the Museum would not only showcase archaeological remains from various sites, but also tell the story of Montréal from a single vantage point, its birthplace at Pointe à Callière.

Building the Museum was a colossal job. Sixteen firms with expertise ranging from archaeology to history, architecture, engineering and museology all worked side by side to complete the Museum in time for Montréal’s 350th anniversary celebrations.

Through archival footage and interviews with Francine Lelièvre, project director, Dan S. Hanganu, architect and designer, Clément Demers, Director of the Société immobilière du patrimoine architectural de Montréal, and Sylvie Dufresne, director of research and museology, you can explore the fabulous story of how this unique museum came to be.
